BEYOND STORAGE: THE BIOBANK AS A STRATEGIC PLATFORM FOR INNOVATION IN RESEARCH AND MEDICINE

Abstract

Biobanks have evolved from sample repositories to strategic platforms for biomedical research. This transformation responds to the need for standardized collections associated with high-qual ity data, which are essential to accelerate the transfer of scientific findings to clinical practice. Biobank management is multidimensional and includes governance, ethical and legal aspects, sustainability, and sample and data management. The value of a biobank lies in the quality of the associated information, so data interoperability and standardization are essential for linking samples with clinical records. Transparent governance strengthens donor trust through clear data access and protection policies. The ethical and legal dimension demands protection of donor privacy and rights, where broad informed consent is fundamental. The sustainability of a biobank requires continuous investment and a diversified funding model. The use of inter national standards such as ISO 20387:2018 maximizes quality and reproducibility. Meanwhile, standards such as MIABIS (Minimum Information About Biobanks) and the FAIR (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reuse) principles help capture structured information and promote interoperability. Biobank networks, such as the BBMRI-ERIC, enable collaborations and access to broader and more diverse collections. In our region, the Latin American and Ca ribbean Biobank Network is making efforts to harmonize, develop internal policies, and achieve sustainability. In Chile and the rest of Latin America, the sustainable development of biobanks requires investment, standardization, and clear regulatory frameworks, consolidating their role as a scientific heritage and driver of biomedical innovation.
